About the classes
The IAIM course curriculum
IAIM baby massage classes are taught by our qualified CIMIs in a relaxed and welcoming environment. They offer a wonderful opportunity to experience how to communicate with your baby through nurturing touch and massage strokes.
Our instructors deliver the most comprehensive and the highest standard of classes currently available in the UK. You will be shown how to adapt the strokes for your baby's individual needs and your growing child. The emphasis and focus is on sensitive and enjoyable interaction between the parent/carer and the baby, so that you gain a deeper understanding of your baby’s behaviour, unique language and cues.
Classes are available in both a group environment or on a one-to-one basis. They are ideally taught over five weeks in order to give both the parent and baby time to learn and become accustomed to the massage. They include time for parent relaxation and informal discussion on the joys and challenges of parenting.
Classes are suitable for all parents and all babies up to one year old. Only the parents will massage the baby as our instructors will always demonstrate the strokes on a doll. Detailed massage stroke handouts will be available.
IAIM classes are baby led, so don’t be concerned about the class coinciding with sleep or feed times. Spare dolls are usually available to practice on if your baby is sleeping. As our classes are all about communication it really is fine if your baby cries as this is naturally one of the ways they express their needs. Our instructor will encourage you to respond promptly and sensitively to your baby's cries as this is acknowledged to be a way of supporting the bonding process.
We encourage you to ask permission from your baby before beginning a massage, and to respond to the baby’s engagement and disengagement cues. This helps with the communication and bonding process by developing feelings such as trust and respect.
On our baby massage course you will learn:
- Massage stokes for legs, feet, stomach, chest, arms, hands, face and back
- A short colic routine
- Gentle movements
- Touch relaxation
- The best time and for how long to massage
- What massage oils to use
- The importance of good positioning
- How to adapt the strokes for your baby's individual needs and the growing child
Group classes usually last from 60 to 90 minutes and generally take place once a week for five consecutive weeks. Courses can vary slightly in length and duration though, so please check the details with your local instructor. Group sessions can be very supportive as we actively encourage parents to share experiences and learn from each other.Find a Class near you today
